Northwestern University S.T.E.A.M. Outreach Project

This screen dance is the culmination of an outreach project between Northwestern University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and Regina Dominican, an all-girls college preparatory high school. The project applied kinesthetic learning techniques to teach students complex scientific concepts. The students, in turn, created a dance for the camera expressing these concepts.

Collaborators: Yuanzhao Zhang, Michael Meyers, Adilson Motter, students at Regina Dominican High School

"The project applied kinesthetic learning techniques to teach students complex scientific ideas about a common topic among dancers, synchronization. The students, in turn, created a dance expressing these ideas." - Daily North Shore

"Lastly, the notion that symmetry (or lack thereof) can lead to surprising collective behavior is also appealing to non-researchers, and this has been explored in an outreach project with high school students in a dance piece titled Syncing Up Without Sameness (see Figure 3)." - Siam News
